By taking advantage of the latest development in valve spring wire chemistry and manufacturing techniques, KPMI has developed ovate wire “Beehive” style springs that will live and perform at a high level in Harley Davidson applications. By coupling these developments with strict KPMI design protocols and employing multiple design, simulation, and FEA analysis software, we were we able to overcome the torsional stresses unique to ovate wire springs that previously severely limited their operating parameters. This was critical, as there are nearly 100 camshaft part numbers available for these applications. KPMI takes a scientific “System” approach when designing our Valve spring kits. Each component is designed to work with the others as part of the complete system. KPMI’s engineers use our proprietary design and simulation softwares, and draw on our 70+ years of design experience to create these systems. Our design, simulation, and manufacturing processes insure compatibility of the valve spring’s force and natural frequency with the cam profile, valvetrain mass, system harmonics, and the engine RPM. Black Diamond™ Valves for Harley-Davidson® Sportster™ 1200cc 1986-2003

All KPMI Black Diamond™ stainless steel valves are impregnated by a special German process to a depth of .002”, with a surface build up of .0002”. This “Black Diamond™” process improves wear properties, reduces friction, and provides resistance to corrosion and wear that is superior to chrome and nickel electrolysis plating. Each valve is designed using Finite Element Analysis software, and profiles are tested on our computerized flow bench. Black Diamond™ Valves are light, strong, one piece forgings with profiles that provide excellent flow characteristics.

C630 Bronze Guides: We choose to use C630 nickel bronze as a material to make valve guides because of its ideal characteristics for the application. The 4-5 percent nickel content produces superior resistance to wear, and the approximately 80 percent copper content delivers outstanding heat conductivity.
Cast Iron Guides: After chemically separating several samples of cast iron material for analysis and evaluating the test data, we decided to have our own specification of cast iron made exclusively for us. We specify elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, nickel, chromium, copper and sulfur to produce a highly pearlitic structure with dense fine grains for excellent wear resistance.

KPMI has been making wrist pin bushing for Big Twins for over 30 years. The racers choice is our “Ampco 45” wrist pin bushings that continue to perform under the most demanding conditions. Recently, KPMI has developed an additional line of Wrist Pin Bushings for Big Twins®.

Our Engine Builder bushings are made from SAE660 bearing bronze. These bushings are made to exact tolerances and will meet or exceed fitment and wear ability of all other replacement style bushings available. Our new “Engine Builder” line of WristPin Bushings are sold individually or in pairs and are available in a +.002” oversize.

Rocker Arm Bushings for Harley-Davidson® Sportster™ 1200cc 1988-2003

Rocker arm bushings need the correct combination characteristics to perform properly in their high load environment. KPMI tested and analyzed several bearing-bronze materials for anti friction qualities, hardness, and resistance to deformation under high loads. Our bronze rocker bushing material meets the high standards we set for success in all of these areas. KPMI Rocker arm bushings are held to tight dimensional tolerances, have an excellent surface finish, machine well, and have a tapered lead on each end to ease installation.

Cylinder Studs for Harley-Davidson® Sportster™ 1200cc 1986-2003

•These High Performance Cylinder studs are made from 180,000 psi yield strength, fine grain, heat treated, premium grade 8740 material.

•Threads are rolled after heat treating to insure maximum compressive stresses are retained, insuring maximum strength, and the longest fatigue life possible.

•The case end threads are designed to have a slight interference fit to maintain good thread contact at high temperature.

•Studs are centerless ground to insure concentricity, and finished with a premium black oxide treatment for excellent appearance.

Cylinder Dowels for Harley-Davidson® Sportster™ 1200cc 1986-2003

KPMI cylinder alignment dowels are machined from steel and receive a black oxide surface treatment. OEM Cylinder Alignment Dowels are often galled and distorted when removed during a top end job. Attempting to straighten and clean the OD of the old dowels is a time wasting, money loosing operation. New KPMI steel dowels make for a quick, clean, easy, and accurate reassembly.

O.E.M. Replacement Keeper Sets for Harley-Davidson® Sportster™ 1200cc 1988-2003

20-2096 These KPMI square bead keepers are forged from high tensile steel and then heat treated to a specific hardness for strength and durability. These keepers are designed to replace the 7° OEM keepers, and they are compatible with the OEM style 7° retainers and OEM or aftermarket valves with OEM style square grooves and stock stem diameters for this application. They undergo a Black Oxide treatment to resist corrosion and give a good appearance.
